CASILE CATHERINE (MILLER) ARENZ Age 85, formerly of Murrysville and Valencia, passed into God's loving embrace November 28, 2015, in Saratoga, CA. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Henry Miller; her husbands, Edward Arenz and Bruno Casile; and her brother, Henry Miller. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Rifino; her four children, Thomas (Barbara) Arenz, Michael (Stacy) Arenz, Amy (Daniel) Storer, and Ellen (Drew) Perkins; and 11 grandchildren, Peter, Anne, Caroline, Karl, Jr., Claire, William, Elizabeth, Katherine, Karrine, Daniel, and Leah; and many nieces and nephews. Born August 4, 1930, in Baltimore, MD, Catherine's family moved many times in her childhood, but finally settled in Cleveland Heights, OH, where she graduated in 1948 from the Beaumont School for Girls. She attended Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Cincinnati, graduating in 1951, and Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ, where she received a B.S.N. in 1954 with Magna Cum Laude distinction. She began work as an R.N. in Pediatrics and Med. Surg. at St. Joseph Infirmary in Louisville, KY, receiving awards and fellowships for her exemplary work. In 1956, she was promoted to Assistant Director of their School of Nursing. Also in 1956, she married Edward Arenz, and in 1957 resigned her position as Assistant Director so she could concentrate on her duties as wife, homemaker, and mother. Between 1957 and 1962, Catherine and Ed had four children before moving to Murrysville in 1965. Catherine was an active member of the local AAUW, was a Great Books volunteer at Mother of Sorrows School, and a volunteer for various Pittsburgh organizations. In 1973, she enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh where she earned a Master's of Nursing Education. She taught nursing at Indiana University of PA, the University of Pittsburgh, and Duquesne University. In 1985 she was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Faculty Award from Duquesne and in May 1988 she received a Master of Public Management from Carnegie Mellon University. After the death of her husband, Edward, in 1988 and her retirement from teaching, in 1995, she married Dr. Bruno "Bill" Casile, a former colleague and fellow educator. She built a life with Bill in Pittsburgh, and stayed active by attending Elderhostel programs, playing cards and Scrabble, joining book clubs, programming music for WQED, volunteering at Birthright of Pittsburgh, and enjoying her retirement to the fullest. They traveled around the country to visit children and grandchildren and became “snowbirds”, escaping the harsh PA winters for the sunny skies of Florida. After Bill passed away in early 2014, she moved to Northern CA to be closer to her family where she remained until God called her home. A Memorial Mass will be held at Mother of Sorrows, Murrysville, PA, on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. A private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made be made in Catherine's name to Birthright of Pittsburgh, Omega Building Suite 200, 160 N. Craig Street, Pittsburgh PA 15213.
