RAYNE JOHN Died on Sunday, August 9, 2015, after a long illness. John was born in Sydney, Australia on March 22, 1927. He received his B.S.E. and M.S.E. from the University of Sydney and received a Fulbright scholarship to study for a Ph.D. in physics which he received from the University of Chicago in 1954. In Chicago, John met his wife, Ann, while she was working at the Institute for International Education. After their marriage in 1954, John continued his research in low-temperature, solid state physics at the CSIRO in Australia and, upon his return to the U.S., at the Westinghouse Research & Development Laboratories in Pittsburgh. In 1964, John became a professor of physics at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) where he continued to do research and teach until his retirement in 1996. John loved to sail and, in his younger years, to ski with his family and friends. He loved classical music and attended symphony and chamber music concerts with his wife for many years. John loved to travel and made numerous trips abroad with his beloved wife, Ann, who survives him and with whom he had just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. He is also survived by his daughter, Susan and son-in-law, Michael (St. Louis, MO); his daughter, Julie (Princeton, NJ); his son, Brian (Pittsburgh, PA); and two grandchildren, Nathan and Nicholas. He was much loved by his family and will be deeply missed. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
