SCHIMMEL KARL F. G.O.D. passed away on Monday morning. Karl, Good Old Dad, was a loving husband of Patricia (Palmer) for 53 years; father of Kurt (Nan), Kathryn, Anne (Wilfredo), and Fr. Eric (CSC); and grandfather of Michelle, Carrie, Philip, Andrew, Monica, and Thomas; and great-grandfather of Adylin, Berlyn, Everett; and a baby boy who is due in October. Family came first for Karl, often not just attending his children's events, but volunteering to help as he could. Born in Allentown to George and Florence Schimmel, he was known to use some colorful Pennsylvania Dutch expressions. He met Patricia at Duquesne where he earned his Ph.D. before doing a post-doc at Florida State. He cared for and provided for his family as they made a home in Penn Hills. After his family, he loved his work as a Senior Research Chemist with PPG in Coatings and Resins. Preferring not to think of it as work, but industrial entertainment, he holds over 60 patents, and liked to make sure everyone involved on a project also got credit and their name on the patent, if possible. After living 15 years with the Alzheimer's disease, he is now himself again in God's kingdom. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (http://www.adrc.pitt.edu/ volunteer/donate/) or the Congregation of Holy Cross, US Province (https://www. holycrossusa.org/support/). Friends received, Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at SOXMAN FUNERAL HOMES, LTD. / ROTH CHAPEL, 7450 Saltsburg Road (at Universal Road), Penn Hills. Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, 10 a.m., at St. Joseph Church of Verona. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
