BUCKNER JOYCE MAXINE (MACKIE) ...

BUCKNER JOYCE MAXINE (MACKIE) Age 73, passed away with her children by her side on Sunday, August 16, 2015. She was born on February 26, 1942, in Pittsburgh, PA. She was a longtime resident of Wilkinsburg, PA, but spent the last four years of her life living close to her children in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. towns of Herndon, VA and Columbia, MD. Joyce was preceded in passing by her beloved husband of 53 years, Oscar C. Buckner, Jr. “Buck”. She was the wonderful mother of Dr. Scott Buckner (Carey) of Ellicott City, MD and Adrienne Glenn (Cleveland) of Reston, VA. She also was the loving grandmother of Scott and Simone Buckner of Gaithersburg, MD and Maya, Kyra, and Celina Glenn of Reston, VA. She will be missed by her siblings, Geraldine Henderson of Pittsburgh, PA and Eric Arnold of Pittsburgh, PA, as well. Joyce was preceded in passing by her siblings, Dolores Sims, Joan Stewart, Theodore Arnold, and Irma Vaughn. Joyce had a long career with the United States Postal Service. She was an active member of the National Alliance of Post Office and Federal Employees Union where she supported the Union's efforts to increase diversity among the workforce of the US Postal Service. For many years, Joyce taught a test preparation course to assist people in the community with passing the US Postal Exam which was required for employment. Joyce valued education and instilled her love of learning in her children at an early age. She also volunteered to read to young children at Wilkinsburg Library. Joyce enjoyed sewing and she was an avid bowler. She enjoyed playing board and card games, as well as cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Above all else, Joyce enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren. Joyce loved her grandchildren and insisted that they were "well-loved" instead of "spoiled", in spite of the many thoughtful ways she showed her love for them. Joyce and her husband Buck enjoyed entertaining and always welcomed family and friends into their loving home. The Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 29, 2015, 1:00 p.m. at Baptist Temple Church in the Homewood area of Pittsburgh, PA at 7241 Race Street. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
